Canyonlands National Park

May 2, 2011
Canyonlands National Park consists of three separate and distinct areas.  The Maze, which is only accessible by 4 wheel vehicle and hiking.    Island in the Sky, which is the northern part of the park and The Needles, which is the southern part of the park.

Today we went to The Needles, which is 1 1/2 hours south of Moab, where we are staying.  The country is so awesome and unbelievable.  Everywhere you look it's another "Kodak moment".  It was a beautiful ride and at one point we had to stop to allow the cows to cross the road.

We took a 2 1/4 hour mountain hike up a scenic trail and again took lots of pictures.  As we started to climb Sue kept saying "Where are we going?".  She was a little frightened because at times you are near the cliff and the only thing that is guiding you along the trail are cairns (pronounced karins).  These are piles of rocks that are the trail markers.  In the end she loved every minute of it.

The camera cannot capture the beauty of what the eye can see, but I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Newspaper Rock.  It is over 2,000 years old.  The funny part about it though is a sign that says "Do not write or deface the rock."  Apparently the people back then could not read.

Here we are near the edge of the cliff.
